Ranger III 1st trip
From the IRKPA: "The Coast Guard gave the go-ahead for her first trip to the island tomorrow morning, after a couple of delays."

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
This morning, I found a website that maps the current location of vessels on Lake Superior, including the Ranger III. At this moment (6:25 a.m. CDT, 5/8/13), it is docked at Mott Island.

That is cool! Now, if I can get a signal on my way across, I will know exactly how far we have to go!!

Off Rock of Ages right now. Presumably that means they can get into Washington Harbor (or think they can). Guess we will see later today.

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
When I took the Ranger in 2010 there was a display in the passenger area showing the boat's current location and GPS track.Wilderness Junkie wrote:That is cool! Now, if I can get a signal on my way across, I will know exactly how far we have to go!!

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
The Ranger failed to get to Windigo today, the ice was still too thick and very solid about 300 yds from the dock and rather than facing potential damage to the boat they were forced to return to Houghton. It will probably be a week before another attempt is made. Hopefully it will start to move around and break loose from land before that.

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
This is wandering away from the topic "Ranger III 1st trip", but here's more about the website that tracks vessel locations (on Lake Superior and at places around the world). It's based on (a link to?) http://www.marinetraffic.org/ which is a project of the Greek University of Aegean. The vessel color indicates the type of ship - "tanker, passenger vessel, cargo vessel, yacht etc." But, I couldn't find a list of the colors/vessel types.
Right now, the Ranger is not visible (not running).

Marine Traffic has a great site, however, if you are into Great Lakes shipping this site does have better coverageLeftOvers wrote:This is wandering away from the topic "Ranger III 1st trip", but here's more about the website that tracks vessel locations (on Lake Superior and at places around the world). Re: Ranger III 1st trip
Just an update on the Marine Traffic site. This link includes the color legend for boats: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/defaul ... level0=100.
At this moment, the Coast Guard tender Alder is moored in Siskiwit Bay, midway between Hay Bay CG and Malone Bay CG/Ranger Station.

There's a couple pics of the Ranger III at Windigo on Thurs on the Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association Facebook page.
