Trip planning is underway

Post by scout »

We will be making our first trip to IR next month  We'll be there for 6 days, the plan is to hike the Feldtmann Lake Loop.
Day 1 Windigo to Feldtmann Lake
Day 2 Feldtmann Lake
Day 3 Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit Bay
Day 4 Siskiwit Bay
Day 5 Siskiwit Bay to Island Mine
Day 6 Island Mine to Windigo

thoughts, suggestions?? We're pretty excited about the trip, can't wait!!

Welcome to the I.R. Forums.

A great itinerary for your first trip to Isle Royale. Siskiwit Bay is a fine place to spend 2 days and rest your legs. If you are a fisherman, Feldtmann lake has some nice northerns.

I would second that. Both Feldtmann Lake and Siskiwit Bay are great places to stay a couple days. Siskiwit is my favorite place on the island thus far. Just keep an eye on your pack weight, and prepare for trails that are rocky and tree root infested.

Cheers,

Check out Rainbow Cove for a day trip at Feldtmann.
You can catch Lake Trout from breakers at Siskiwit.
Maybe a portable lightweight backcountry saw for Island Mine fire pit.

You will certainly see less people on this side of island. Have fun!

I have done that exact trip 3 times and it is perfect. I love having the days off on this loop.
While at Feldtmann Lake, Rainbow Cove is only .8 miles from the campground and it is great place to catch the sunset with plenty of light to walk back afterwards.
While at Siskiwit Bay, a good walk is down the beach and to the bridge over Big Siskiwit River and to Senter Point.

You will have agreat trip. I have taken this route twice, clockwise and counterclockwise. I posted trip reports on both. The most recent was this May.

I've done most of that trip in reverse as part of a longer hike three times.

Sometimes the creek at Island Mine is low or even dry. You will pass another creek about 1/4 mile before Island Mine CG. That one has had good flow everytime I've been through there.

Hey JerryB!

I still lose sleep over not being able to share a cold beer with you and your hiking partner last year at Chippewa. If we meet again I'll make it right!
