Fishing Lake Ahmik and Lake Eva?

Post by Spartan »

My wife and I are planning our next kayaking trip to the Island and we will be paddling through the Five Fingers area. Does anyone know if it is possible to hike into Lake Ahmik (from Stockly Bay) and Lake Eva (from Pickerel Cove)? And could I portage a kayak into either one of these? Thinking of trying to fish in either one. Have been looking at Google maps to see if there is any clear access to either lake but tough to tell. Lake Eva appears to have a small stream leading to Pickerel Cove but doesn't look like it is really navigable....

I have not tried either one, but where that stream shows by where you would go into Lake Eva, if memory serves, that is a large bay with a lot of stumps and such and looked navigable at least at the entrance from the cove. I would imagine you might have to get out at points. The park lists that lake as 24' maximum depth with yellow perch and pike.

It lists Ahmik as only 10' maximum depth and the same types of fish. Based on the topo, this one looks like it would be a short and easy portage from Stockly.

I attempted to reach Lake Eva in waning evening light. I turned back. This is what I learned....

I first searched for an opening on the shorter distance western end. I could not locate a suitable
place as it was very steep in all areas and the underbrush/pine was too dense.

I then went to the east end and found a little bay/low area. There is a manmade trail or game trail
on the western side of this bay following up the ridge toward Eva. The trail seems to follow the ridge
line west and does not take a direct straight-line path to the Lake. I turned back before the lake shore,
but felt satisfied this was the best route.

Hope you make it to the lake and let me know the condition of the remainder of the route.

Lake Eva is very accessible by kayak/canoe from the cove. That little stream/wetland that feeds out into Pickeral Cove is an easy find. Just stick close to the shore. Once you see that, there will be a small moose trail on the right side. Follow that back and hug the left side. Over a small ridge and lake Eva will appear. I was out there a few years back....

It's a short distance, but doesnt hurt to shoot a compass heading though, lol. It gets pretty thick in there...
