Re: Cultural Resources Mgmnt Plan meetings
I attended the meeting in Chelsea, MI. There was one member from the Forum that I knew of, k2one, also there.Tightlines01 wrote:Please let us know how they go. I won't be able to make it to any of them.
The presentation by Paul Brown, The Chief Ranger for Natural Resources was very informative. He gave a history of the project from the begining to today.
He mentioned the "reappearance" of marten. I was not aware that it had been some 70 years since they had been seen on IR. I asked, given the presence of researchers on IR in winter, when tracks would be easily seen, why they were not seen. He said that marten would be a prey of wolves and avoided areas wolves frequented, the trails of IR which they use to move around the park. Amazing that they have been there and not seen!
What I learned about the wolves:
Mainland wolves carry the same trait (extra vertebrae) as the IR wolves.
There are 2 types of wolves in MI, The Eastern Wolf (which the IR wolves are) and the Grey Wolf.
The male that came over in '96 brought with it 2 viruses (I believe) that are in the wolves.
It is thought that part of the reason wolves came to IR was the heavy timbering going on in CN and MN.
I asked whether caribou would survive on IR (sufficient browse) lichens, ect. I have been to the Slate Islands in Canada where they live (near Terrace Bay, ON). I was told if there weren't moose, that caribou would do fine. I also asked about the presence of wolverine on IR, no known occurrences.
I asked further about the theory that moose were brought to the Island. Apparently there was one person who remembers hearing his dad tell of bringing moose to IR.
Whitetail were there, once, as a result of hunters bringing them there. As there is no one else to substantiate this theory, the NPS states moose swam across.
The CRMP presentation was done by Chief of Interpretation Liz Valencia and Cultural Resources Ranger Seth Depasquale. The biggest issue seems to be the structures on IR summer homes, fisheries buildings and the homes the fisherman lived in and whether they should be preserved. There are 4 options for the CRMP. I asked if we could combine alternatives, which we can (ie points from 2 different alternatives can be combined).
Comments for the CRMP must be submitted by December 4th, 2013 .

Re: Cultural Resources Mgmnt Plan meetings
Thanks for the recap and taking the time to attend and be an active participant. I wish I was able to attend, I don't know that I'm as educated about the issues as much as I could be. The articles you've been linking are nice to read also.
Thanks for your efforts
