The forums have been updated...

Post by fonixmunkee »

As of 18 April 15, the Isle Royale Forums have been updated.

OK, so why did they get updated?
The forum software required a desperately-needed security update.

Why didn't you tell us, everything looks so different!
I didn't intend on updating it without notifying everyone...while practicing the upgrade, it actually upgraded the ACTIVE software forum. Whoops. With the new version of the forum, there's a new look, too. The old look will never be back. Sorry. If you don't like the new look, please vote in the poll!

So what all is new?
The biggest change outside of the look is the increased security. There are a few more improvements, though:
  • Secure logins: The forum is now 100% SSL, AKA HTTPS. This means your username & password are always transmitted encrypted.
  • Social network logins: You can connect your Facebook, Twitter, or Google account to your forum account to login. No more remembering passwords. To connect your account, click here.
  • Faster performance: Many optimizations have been made to make the forum run a little speedier.
  • Better mobile device support: You can now easily use the forum on your mobile device. The web version of the forum on your tablet, iPad, or phone has all the same features as the full web version.
  • Tapatalk support: Increased Tapatalk support. What is Tapatalk? It's an app for or iOS or Android device to browse the forums in the most optimal fashion possible. Learn more here.

Is there any way to extend the length of time before the board automatically logs you out? If there is a long post, I'm logged out before I even get a change to read it all.

Thanks Dear. I didn't notice this problem so much before the updates. Maybe it's just me getting older and reading slower...

Nancy,

Give it a shot now and let me know if you get logged out again. I have set the time-out to two weeks.

It's been a few weeks and I haven't heard of any problems with the new forum software, so I'm going to un-sticky this thread from the top of the forums. It also appears from the poll that people are happy with the new colors and layout. Hooray/sigh-of-relief.

Feel free to PM or email me if you do have any other problems.

Is it just me, or has the photo at the top of the forum always been so large?

I wish it was shorter, so that I had to do less scrolling to get to the forum part.

If it's just me, please carry on.

It's not just you; I've seen it very large at times, too. But I can't tell *when* it's too large. For instance, at work, on a Windows 7 computer using Google Chrome, the picture is normal. Then, when I'm at home on a Windows 10 computer using Google Chrome, it's large. On my phone it's normal-sized.

So, what type of computer/browser combination are you using? Let's see if I can trouble-shoot this a bit.

On my iOS devices using Safari, it a single large picture with mist on the water (Smoke on the Water?).
I use Windows 7 with I.E. 11 on my desktop and it is 3 smaller pictures, but does not include the mist.
I'm just thankful to be able to use this forum, so you can invert the pics if you want and I'd be fine!

Three different environments:

1. Phone: Android, Chrome, large misty photo that doesn't seem to be oversized.

2. Surface Pro 3: Windows 10, Chrome, large misty photo that takes up almost the entire screen.

3. Desktop: Windows 7: Chrome, short but wide banner photo that is three photos. Not obtrusive.
