Pooping on the Trail

I've been lucky enough to always have my trowel with me and not having to use it so far. But this article from Backpacker has me wondering, since I have seen toilet paper decorating the trail before. Pack it out? Put it in a cat hole? Wait until you hit a privy?

Sorry for the gross but entirely human hiker topic.

Digging a cat hole in that soil is a challenge in itself, but I pack it to an outhouse then flush the ziplock bag (wash it out)
