Very good paddling advice but I would add the following:

1) A waterproof visual distress beacon such as a strobe light. They are quite small and should be attached to your vest or person. Conventional flares could be used as well. If you become beached on a rock face and can't climb out, a waterproof light is your only hope to be seen after dark. If your flashlight is waterproof then keep it on your person. Same rules for your knife.

2) In addition to an oar lash, bring a spare oar.

3) The costs of EPIRBs or PEPIRBs have really come down in price. Or alternately a satellite texting devices such as a Garmin/DeLorme InReach.
