NPS to offer fishing clinics in 2022

Post by johnhens »

Families coming to IR have another activity they can do starting next summer. The NPS will be offering clinics for fishing. From the NPS:

For 2022, there will be more opportunities for the relationship between fish and people to thrive at Isle Royale. With a grant from the National Park Foundation, rangers will be offering “Angling the Archipelago” fishing clinics for youth and their families at Rock Harbor and Windigo throughout the summer season. While learning how to fish from the shoreline, families will explore the significance of the park’s fishery, and what actions they can take to fish responsibly. Additionally, park researchers are hoping to conduct a creel survey, which is a record of a single day’s fishing effort, providing details on what the angler caught, released, and time spent fishing. The results will help determine angler use patterns, catch and harvest rates, and seasonal patterns.
More than 75 percent of Isle Royale is composed of aquatic habitats, many of which provide homes for the 61 fish species known to be present in the park. So the next time you cross Lake Superior’s vastness via boat or seaplane, or sit at one of the park’s many docks relishing where the lake ends and the sky begins, take a moment to contemplate about what thrives in the deep, and what part we may play in it.
