Ranger snacks?

Questions about how to get to the island and where to stay near points of departure.

Ranger snacks?

Post by jerry »

I haven't been on the Ranger in a few years. They used to have food/snacks, such as chili, ice cream and drinks, etc. How about now, do they provide anything recently?

They have candy bars, chips, coffee, soda, water, etc... available for purchase.

Thanks for the quick response! I found their chili to be unique. I guess that's not available anymore.

Unfortunately, i dont recall it on the menu last time I rode the Ranger over. I very well could be incorrect though.

Didn't even have snacks last year. Bring your own snacks and drinks (they do have water). There was only 1 ranger doing everything (orientation, registration, questions, etc.) and no other NPS employees in the passenger areas of the boat.

I suspect this year is doing to be a cluster fuck on the island with Orange Mans staffing freezes & cuts. Don't get hurt in the back country unless you're planning on living there until it heals or the wolves find you.

Hmm! Maybe I should do the Superior Hiking Trail in NE Minnesota, instead of going to our special NP.

No, we (we being the return customers / regulars) should all continue to enjoy what we love. I think its the busy season that will bear the brunt of the potential low staffing problems. Last time i rode first boat out of GP, there weren't even any NPS staff / rangers at the dock in Windigo when we pulled in.

Get off & good luck was about it, other than Rolf meeting his Mooswatch people at the dock.

I get in and out before Memorial Day weekend, so I expect the lack of staff will have little effect on our travels. The store usually opens East end about the time we leave and West end the week after we leave. Every spring we see the trail crews clearing downed trees and widow makers, setting trail cams, charging the shitters with enzymes, etc... Not to mention the staff that get the water filtration & showers/bathrooms/laundry online for the season (I'm not even touching on lodge staff).

I really think its going to be a mess this year, hopefully I'm wrong but we're already about 100days out from first boat.
