Regardless, it is & was always bad advice. I'd seen fox on the island casing tents / camps multiple times on Isle Royale. Like the rumors for years that were ignored of Fox stealing boots until it was proven. Those fox are about as close to being domesticated as you can be without living in my backyard or livingroom.

I plan to bring my bear proof container this year. I can't open it unless I have a dime or screw driver with me. I've had a number of foxes, over the years, sitting nearby, like they were wanting to be feed (like one of our pets).

It's really more surprising that they didn't have more troubles with fox & tent/bush campers in the past & that a young wolf started it all. Fox are so much less timid and several of the ones I've came across on the island have a near zer0 fear of people. In the context that I've had two in 5 trips come within 15' of less of me while in camp.

I walked within 5 feet of a fox on my last visit near Windigo That fox did not give a damn and just stood there as I walked by. It followed me for about 100 yards before moving back toward the campground.

Back in 2001 a fox was called Steely Dan (us old ones enjoyed that 1) by a ranger. Not sure if this was the fox that stole everything it could. Shoes, clothing, food, equipment, etc. Also one year, there was a fox that was super skinny and didn't look too healthy. The staff was worried about it and thought it didn't have lone to live. I guess it wasn't relate to S.D. I love our NP and hope we get to visit it this year.
