Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms
Saw this online in the Daily Mining Gazette: http://www.mininggazette.com/page/conte ... l?nav=5006
It sounds like quite an adventure, what with the crew having to feed people by catching fish!

Sounds like more food would have been in order. I wonder if they have life boat rations? I don't know if they have to carry them on the Great Lakes. They would probably be packed inside the rafts anyway.

Do we know if they made it back yet? I was part of the group that got stuck one extra day in August. My heart goes out to these poor folks. We all know IR is not the worst place to be stuck (it might be one of the best) but hanging around in one spot waiting for the weather to improve is not the most fun you can have on IR either.

Re: Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms
I'm a little confused by the article. I just arrived back in Copper Harbor last Friday (sept 25th) via the Queen. Not sure how they could be stuck there for 5 days, unless they did a turn around back to IR after dropping us off. I know that Monday Sept 28th was supposed to be the last day that the Queen would run this year. Maybe they decided to stay the weekend at Rock Harbor, and just do their final run back on Monday.
My trip was great by the way, trip report coming soon.

They got back Wednesday. Supposedly 20-25 foot waves late Monday and into Tuesday.

It could be a bummer if the store & resaturant aren't open to get more supplies (and beer). I'd hope that the passengers could at least wait in the RH campground shelters.Nitsirk wrote:We all know IR is not the worst place to be stuck (it might be one of the best) but hanging around in one spot waiting for the weather to improve is not the most fun you can have on IR either.

Re: Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms
Just checked the buoy info - actually max waves of 13.94 ft late on September 28th at the Mid-Superior buoy and 17.22 at the buoy 78 miles NE of Marquette, so I guess not so bad

14 and 17 are still mighty big waves for Superior. I would love to see that.....from a safe distance of course.

Re: Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms
14-17 at the mid lake buoy could easily be much bigger as the swells approach land. I don't think 20+ is out of the question.
