Porkies Day Trip

Post by Ingo »

Might get a short day trip in to the Porkies next month. Suggestions for must see areas and short hikes?

Just got back from the Porkies on Wednesday. Wonderful time. Cool and full of mosquitoes, but, only in the INTERIOR of the Porkies. The Lake Superior Trail was bug free and the area I would recommend. And, the campsite that we like the most is called "Lone Rock" which, as the title suggests, looks over an island on the shoreline of Lake Superior. It's about 4-5 miles in from the road.
We walked in a cloud (of fog) till we reached the lake. Looked like a scene from Shutter Island. Woke up to sunshine and the sound of waves.

The other area that I would recommend would be "Big Carp Falls". Beautiful, but you're getting into a bug area.

Also, as us Porkie veterans know, you will encounter mud, especially after all this rain we had. But, IT'S WORTH IT!!!

For a day trip, you might want to hike the Escarpment Trail. Beautiful views of Lake of the Clouds.
