Indian Portage Trail

Post by nicolepaul »

I'm planning to portage a canoe from Lake Richie to McCargoe Cove.
Could you tell me about that trek so I know what to expect?
Thanks.

Here's a link from a trip in the opposite direction, McCargoe to Chippewa, but it covers that section. The trip log has some descriptions of the portages and approx times.

You definitely want to take advantage of Lakes Livermore and LaSage as opposed to portaging the whole way, if that was what you were thinking!

It's going to be a long day. You'll encounter some hills between each set of lakes, both ups and downs. I have done Chickenbone to Richie, twice, with kayaks, and it wore me down. You'll be going one portage further than that. Might be different with a canoe. But as long as you're not in any hurry, you should enjoy the variety of lakes you'll go through. I recommend you take your time and enjoy it, fish a little, especially at Chickenbone, which is worth a day and a night in itself.
