Recent Isle Royale books

Post by johnhens »

I read a few books recently either about Isle Royale or related somewhat to Isle Royale and one about North Manitou Island for those who have been there.

Naked in the Stream Isle Royale Stories by Vic Foerster.
This book chronicles his adventures on IR and elsewhere and includes an amazing story of a kayak trip from IR to the Keweenaw. His last adventure reminds me of some of my early "adventures" in the Outdoors.

Minong-The Good Place by Timothy Cochrane.
Cochrane does a Great job telling the story of some of the earliest visitors to Isle Royale, the Ojibway Indians. Also good insight into the early years of fishing and mining on IR.

Knife Island: Circling a Year in a Herring Skiff by Stephen Dahl.
Though not directly related to IR, the author spent time on the Wenonah and Voyager and did a little fishing on IR.
The Story mostly follows a year of herring fishing areounf Knife Island north of Duluth. There are few fisherman left who make their living as commercial fisherman, good insight into their lives and a history of North Shore Fishing.

North Manitou Island Between Sunrise and Sunset by Rita Hadra Rusco.
I love Islands and Island Life. I also enjoy reading of the adventures of those lucky enough to live on an island.
For those not a famliar with North Manitou, it and its sister island South Manitou are located in Eastern North Lake Michigan off the the coast of Sleeping Bear Dunes. The book tells of life on North Manitou through the eyes of a resident. The joys and sometimes tough life of Island Living is accurately portrayed by the author.

Dairies of an Isle Royale Fisherman and
Geology of the Lake Superior Region

in the mail. I'm excited to read them both.

If you have not already read "A Good Boat Speaks For Itself" (also by Timothy Cochrane), you might enjoy that!!

John, my buddy and I backpacked (it was a short hike) on North Manitou Island several years ago. On the way home we ended up at a local bookstore in the area and I found the "North Manitou Island Between Sunrise and Sunset" book. I bought the book and read it not long after the hike. I too enjoyed the book, especially after having been on the island because I was able to relate some of the sights I saw with what was described in the book.
