Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
I'm planning on taking the Isle Royale Queen from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor on 7/26.
7/26--Rock Harbor to Three Mile via Rock Harbor Trail
7/27--Three Mile to Moskey Basin
7/28--Moskey Basin to West Chickenbone (setting up camp early and taking an afternoon hike down to McCargoe Cove)
7/29--West Chickenbone to Three Mile via the Greenstone (long day, but at least more downhill than up)
7/30--Three Mile to Rock Harbor via the Tobin Harbor Trail and outbound on the Queen
My first ever backpacking trip was to IR last year, so I'm still trying not to push it too much in terms of miles per day. I've done extensive 15-20 mile day hikes around various locations in the UP (Pictured Rocks, Porcupine Mountains) etc.
Last year's schedule was--
7/20--Ranger III from Houghton to Rock Harbor. Hiked out to Scoville Pt. and back, camped at Rock Harbor. Got to see Rolf Peterson give a presentation about the wolves which was very interesting.
7/21--Rock Harbor to Lane Cove via Tobin Harbor trail
7/22--Lane Cove to Daisy Farm, set up camp early and took an afternoon hike up the Daisy Farm trail to the Greenstone and back.
7/23--Daisy Farm to Rock Harbor via Rock Harbor trail. Rock Harbor ranger presentation was ranger Liz talking about the bugs of Isle Royale. Interesting perspective on seeing them as more than a mere nuisance.
7/24--Outbound on the Ranger
My goal is to eventually hike all of the trails in the park, but I'm planning on taking several years to do it. I really want to limit my number of miles per day and soak up the natural beauty of IR.

Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
hi Nym
I have done the same itinerary. I think you will find you can pump a few more miles in if you want and its not too difficult. You could almost get lane cove in if you wanted. Make sure you look before you leap into west chickenbone lake, last time I was there the ranger warned us the lake had an unusual amount of leeches, and if you jump in to cool off, you might be peeling leeches. Oh Yea, the wolves were active there too, lots of new foot prints when we woke up, maybe you will get lucky and see one. It is a wonderful quiet spot.enjoy!!

Re: 2011 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
I received my sea plane confirmation today.
Name: Tim aka Vandy
Email: tvandy1(at)nc.rr.com
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Arrival Date: 06/24
Departure Date: 7/2
Coming From/Via: Houghton via sea plane
Itinerary:
6/24 – Arrive in Houghton via plane; overnight in Calumet motel
6/25 – Sea plane to Windigo; Hike to Huginnen Cove CG (5 miles)
6/26 – Hike to Island Mine CG (10 miles)
6/27 – Hike to Desor South CG (5.5 miles)
6/28 – Hike to Todd Harbor CG (12 miles)
6/29 – Hike to McCargo Cove CG (7 miles)
6/30 – Hike to Lane Cove CG (13 miles)
7/01 - Hike to Rock Harbor (7 miles); Sea plane to Houghton; overnight in Calumet motel
7/02 – Depart Houghton via plane
Notes/Other: This is my fourth trip to the island. The first since 1997, my first IR solo, and my first on any portion of the western end of the island. I’m planning a short day followed by a long day approach, figuring there are enough campgrounds to go longer on the short days if I want to.

Name: Jesse
Hometown: Brookfield, IL (Chicago suburb)
Arrival Date: May 16
Departure Date: May 20
Coming From/Via: Copper Harbor via the Queen IV
Itinerary:
May 16: Arrive at Rock Harbor. Make a run for Lane Cove as soon as we get the green light
May 17: Moskey Basin
May 18: West Chickenbone
May 19: Lap Chickenbone Lake, then to Daisy or Three Mile
May 20: Back to Rock Harbor for a shower and a ride to Copper Harbor
Notes/Other: My brother and I are considering some small variations on this, and I'm open to any suggestions!
Sidebar: I heard a rumor that you can store a bag in a locker or something at Rock Harbor. I'm thinking it would be a good place to stash a clean set of clothes and shower stuff. Where? How much $? Does it really exist? How big is the locker?

Excerpt from the Isle Royale NPS FAQ:
Are there storage lockers on the Island?
No, there are no storage lockers on the Island. The concession operation at Rock Harbor and Windigo do offer a service to store gear for a fee. The box of gear cannot contain stove fuel or food. Contact the Rock Harbor Lodge office for more information - (906) 337-4993.

Doh! I assumed I could just get a cab at the airport since it seems equidistance as Houghton/Hancock. I'm inquiring with the motel on potential transportation now. Thanks for asking the question! How do you plan on getting between Calumet and Houghton? Its about 11 miles, and I am unaware of any public transportaion that runs between those towns.
