lockers at Rock Harbor?

Post by karebing »

HI all, less than 2 weeks now, Yippee

I read somewhere, but can't find it now, that there are lockers at Rock Harbor. I am considering leaving some clothes there for the end of the trip. Does anyone know where they are? How big? and how much? Also, if one plans to use one, is there any problems with there not being open ones when you get there and having to carry that stuff instead? Thanks all, Karen

Excerpt from the Isle Royale NPS FAQ:

Are there storage lockers on the Island?
No, there are no storage lockers on the Island. The concession operation at Rock Harbor and Windigo do offer a service to store gear for a fee. The box of gear cannot contain stove fuel or food. Contact the Rock Harbor Lodge office for more information - (906) 337-4993.

Same price this year. Some even resorted to just stashing a bag hidden along the trail.

And they charge for the first and last day. So, if you drop it off at 4:00 PM today and pick it up at 9:00 AM tomorrow, it will be $6.00. We stayed the last night at the lodge and checked a bag with clean clothes, etc. while we hiked the island.

It worked for Lewis and Clark a long time ago.

Last year cost me $18 cause I had traveling clothes and extra cold weather gear for my next destination which was Glacier NP. Thinking about caching gear trailside this year.

I wouldn't advertise caching gear, that may be frowned upon. And, anything with food, I am quite sure, would be frowned upon. JMHO.

My thoughts are, if you can afford a trip to the Isle, you, most likely, can afford the $3/day storage fee. Buck-up sports fans!

This is a wilderness area, let's keep it that way.

well, I have no intentions of leaving anything anywhere other than the store however, I am not convinced that spending $24 bucks to have a clean change of clothes is worth it somehow. I think I may just try and wash out something the night before, Ha Ha....however, we do have 4 in our party. Could I put 4 changes of clothes in a bag and leave it for $3 /day? In other words, how big a bag/box can you leave? That would make it $6/each which is reasonable in my mind. If anyone knows the answer to THAT one, let me know. As it is, I guess the lodge restaurant is used to getting fairly interesting types for dinner and we might be some of them. :) Karen

There really isn't a size restriction, within reason. A duffel bag, or whatever, with four changes of clothing, I'm thinking, would be within reason.

So, you're right, $6 X four people, isn't that great of a charge, for the convenience of having clean clothes after a shower, post back-country adventures. :)

I am not sure what the cost of the laundary facility is in Rock Harbor, but in an hour and some
you could have fresh clothes for 4 for most likely less than 5 bucks. JJ

You will be out of luck then. The STORE does not store bags. The LODGE OFFICE (about 200 yards away) is where you stash your bag. Also, a couple of years ago at Windigo it cost $12 to wash and dry one load in the machines. Not sure if R.H. cost the same or not.
