9/19/13: We had to cancel our trip due to job circumstances :( So, for the first time in 7 years I will not be making a fall trip. Time to look forward to May :D I am debating whether to unpack or, just leave everything packed till then!
Name: Mike & Nancy T.
Email: mike@isleroyale.info
Hometown: Port Sanilac, MI
Arrival Date: September 22
Departure Date: October 3 (Last Voyageur trip)
Coming From/Via: Grand Portage

Itinerary:
Day 1: Grand Portage to Windigo via Voyageur II. Hike to Huginnin Cove via West Huginnin Cove Trail.
Day 2: Huginnin Cove.
Day 3: Huginnin Cove to Washington Creek via East Huginnin Cove Trail.
Day 4: Windigo to Rock Harbor via Voyageur II. Paddle to Strawberry Island.
Day 5: Rock Harbor to Malone Bay via Voyageur II. Malone Bay to Intermediate Lake Campground.
Day 6: Intermediate Lake Campground (may move to Richie to gain another "swing day").
Day 7: Intermediate Lake Campground to Lake Richie Canoe Campground.
Day 8: Lake Richie Canoe Campground.
Day 9: Lake Richie Canoe Campground to Wood Lake Campground.
Day 10: Swing Day (stay at Wood Lake unless the next days weather dictates moving)
Day 11: Wood Lake Campground to Malone Bay Campground.
Day 12: Malone Bay to Grand Portage via Voyageur II.

Notes: We had to change our schedule due to their being no spots available from Grand Portage to Windigo on 9-25  because of a large school group so, we have to go early and catch the boat around on Wednesday. My Dad (he will be 77 in October!) is not going to go because he feels the extra days would be too much for him :( .
While waiting for the boat around to Rock Harbor, we will be leaving our canoe in Windigo and hiking out to Huginnin Cove. Nancy has never been there and I have not been there since they "remodeled" it. Plus, it is one of my favorite spots on the island! :D
All days off are subject to change based on the weather.

John,

I hope not for your sake, but I believe that any shutdown will only last a day or two. It's too bad when politics gets involved in our daily life to this extent. Maybe in part it's because our daily life is not involved enough in politics.

If anyone can get there in the next day or two (or those already there) will be in for an interesting experience as the NPS would officially give anyone on the island 48 hours to leave (there are plans for exceptions of course).

Here are the published plans I found from the DOI and NPS. It's interesting that the non governmental website has more details than the DOI.

Thanks, my not getting to IR this year is insignificant compared to the loss of pay for the Govt folks. I always have a Plan B, in this case I will go hike part of the Superior Hiking Trail if the shut down happens. Thought of you, by the way as we crossed the Miss in Lacrosse yesterday on our way back from The Black Hills !!
