doable route

Post by rhewitt »

hi,
i'm taking the boat from copper. is rock harbor to McCargoe Cove reasonable with such a late start to the day?
i bike 20 miles five days a week and did the superior trail in the Porkies in one day. any thoughts? thanks

I'm no expert but if my map reading worked then it is in the vacinity of 16 miles using the routes I examined.

I went to a map site, enlarged it and added the mileage. I do 15-25 miles a day on various trails at age 52 but I would not tackle that distance unless I started early in the day.

On the map, I chose the trail to Daisy farm along the shore, over the hill and took Greenstone to the trail East Chickenbone to the cove.

That's a long haul with a 45-50 pound pack on sometimes rough trails up and over the Greenstone Ridge. It's not really comparable to a bike ride; I ride a lot of miles and it is way different.

To answer your original question - yes it is doable. It's around 15 miles and you will be hitting the trail before noon.

If you take the Tobin Harbor Trail to the Threemile/Mt. Franklin intersection and take a right up to the Greenstone you will have somewhat easier hiking than if you go via Daisy Farm. As I recall, the Greenstone from Mt. Franklin to East Chickenbone is not particularly tough. At East Chickenbone you would cut down to McCargo Cove.
