I just bought a Nikon DSLR (D7000) and am contemplating what sort of protection I want/need for an I.R. canoe trip (hopefully this summer). I'm leaning towards a Pelican/Hardigg Storm case--about 5 lbs and bulky, but it'll have 2-3k worth of equipment in it. Looking for opinions from anyone who's brought serious photo gear before. I did get a shoulder sling bag for hiking/out-and-about use. That could go in a dry bag, but wouldn't offer as much impact protection and not as convenient for on-the-water shooting.

Re: Camera protection
I've used a Pelican case for my Cannon Rebel for years. I especially like the precut foam padding that comes with the case that can be customized to fit the camera. I drilled a couple of holes on the exterior flanges of the case so I could bungee cord it to the deck of the kayak just in front of the cockpit. That gives me easy access. Here is a photo.

Another vote for the Pelican case, both Tricia and I use them. Well worth the $$ IMO.
