Minong Ridge Trail in 2 Days?

Post by Tangent »

Does anyone believe that it's possible to hike the Minong Ridge Trail in 2 days? Windigo to McCargo Cove. I have UL Gear (approx. 15 lbs base, 30 w/food). I'm planning a 9 day trip in Late Sep. 2011 and I want to maximize my time on the island. Let me know your thoughts.

It's not impossible; N. Desor first night, then on to McCargo. Get an early start the second day. The Desor to Hatchet/L.Todd intersection is the bear, not too tough the rest of the way. Hydrate well, prior to the humps, and take minimal water to lighten up the load.
The weather will possibly dictate your miles, also. If your beat, you can always stop at Todd Harbor.
Just my thoughts. HYOH

I think it’s doable, but it will be quite a hump. I did the trail in 3 days this June. McCargoe to Todd Harbor the first day, but I’m sure I could have hiked to Little Todd if I wanted to, Todd Harbor to Desor the second day and Desor to Windigo the last day.

Windigo to Little Todd Harbor junction is a pretty tough. Lots of rock hopping and up and down

The 12.7 from the Little Todd junction to McCargoe isn’t real hard..Little Todd junction to Todd Harbor is pretty flat, but I did encounter some downed trees. Todd Harbor to McCargoe has a few challenges, but not terribly difficult.

Like jrwiesz says…weather will play a big factor.

Good Luck

In June the V2 picked up (at Windigo) a guy from KC, Mo. who went from McCargoe to Windigo in 2 days during the rain event that happened back then.

Thank you for the insight. I think that if I'm to do this I'm going to have to go with Windigo - N. Desore, and then N.Desore - McCargo. I'd like to just do Windigo to Little T. but, I don't think that there will be enough time in the day (first day off the boat). As you both pointed out, weather is a big concern. If it's really bad weather on the N. Side, I would question the ability do this even if you had a support team, and no pack at all. Overall, I'm feeling like I can do this. In fact, I'm starting to dig the challenge. As far as I'm concerned, the worst thing that can happen is that I can't make it and I end up staying in an super sweet campsite. There's worse things in this world.

If I can get this accomplished in two I'm thinking about Lane Cove, Moskey, Hatchet, Siskwit, Feltman, VII. Sleep and eat for two days. One way or another it's going to be epic.

Sorry didn't notice Jerry's post. There we go. What one man can do, another can do! I'm going to have to kill the bear then. That's from the movie the Edge if you didn't get that.
