Is it necessary to make reservations well in advance during July out of Grand Portage or can you watch the weather and make reservations a few days ahead?

Depends on how flexible your schedule is or how many days you will be in the area, it is not full everyday, but if it is, you can chhose the next trip if your able. If you're not, get it booked before the week of the trip.
