Questions about how to get to the island and where to stay near points of departure.

Dayhikes near Hwy 61?

Post by torpified »

North of Duluth, Hwy 61 looks to be teeming with parks. Any recommendations about where to stop for a quick (< 2 hr) walk on the drive up to Grand Portage?

Gooseberry Falls may fit the bill. Search for it on the internet and you will find maps and more

Stop at the Tofte Ranger station nearTemperance SP. They have literature about Britton Peak, Oberg Mt and other scenic hikes.

Climb EAGLE MTN, Minnesota's highest point! Perfect side hike, and a landmark.

Second Gooseberry Falls and Temperance River, although they are popular and busy in the summer. Also High Falls at Grand Portage St Pk--right before the border crossing--highest (and most impressive) falls in the state. Split Rock lighthouse is another nice spot but I'm not sure about trails there--although I've seen some gorgeous photos of the lighthouse from down the beach, so there's got to be some.

Google "Superior Hiking Trail" and pick any one of 1,000 adventures.

Thanks for the suggestions! I may have to revisit Hwy 61 in order to act on them all . . . .
