Monolith?
I seem to remember reading about a giant rock/stone tower a little way off the trail somewhere between Mt. Franklin and Lookout Louise on the Greenstone. Does this ring a bell for anyone? I want to say it was in Jim Dufresne's book but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called or exactly where it is.

Maybe you are thinking of Monument Rock, which is on the trail up to Lookout Louis from Hidden Lake.

Yep! That's what I was thinking of. I still haven't seen it yet because I hear it can get crowded near there but....yeah, it's on my list for this summer.Isle Royale Rob wrote:Maybe you are thinking of Monument Rock, which is on the trail up to Lookout Louis from Hidden Lake.

Re: Monolith?
Here's another photo of Monument Rock. My buddy and I were up close and personal with the "monument" during our May 2007 trip. It is a pretty impressive sight when you're standing at the base looking skyward. The weather was great that day and better yet, we didn't see a single person at that end of the island. It's nice to interact with fellow hikers, but there is also something to be said for a good dose of peace, quiet and solitude. Maybe we didn't see anyone because it was so early in the season. I guess it is easy access by boat, kayak or canoe, but there really isn't anyplace to go once you are that far over. And, since there is only one trail in and out I wonder if that helps cut down on the traffic a bit.

Wow, thanks for the two pics...very good contrasting views of the rock. I honestly haven't seen this before!
