TD vs. LTH

Post by ViaChicago »

Sitting here procrastinating on work by daydreaming about my 2025 return trip to island. My friends and I are planning on doing the cross island hike, starting in Rock Harbor and heading west and I plan on putting a zero day somewhere in the second half of the trek. Does anybody have strong opinions on whether Todd Harbor or Little Todd Harbor is a better place to put a zero day?

Having never been on the Minong, my uninformed thought is Todd Harbor, only because there is a shelter there and we could potentially snag it for our second night. Maybe there are things I cam not considering though.

Todd Harbor is one of my favorite campgrounds on the island. It does have a shelter, picnic tables, and over by the group sites there’s a dock and a fire ring. The beach is cobblestone and great for swimming. LTH is more remote and less developed, but has a strip of beach too. No picnic tables and the campground development is minimal - just clearings for individual campsites and the privy. I would ask yourself when your body will need the break, plan accordingly and leave your options open.

Todd is also my favorite CG. There's no dock at Little Todd so there's none of the "luxuries" of Todd. Still Little Todd is a favorite among many others due to more solitude I suspect. At Todd there is a nice water fall visible from the water, less than 1/2 mile SW of the CG. I've never been but have read accounts of others that visited the falls. Caution on swimming at Todd. Things always come and go of course but I have heard on 3 separate occasions spread years apart of Swimmers Itch caused by a tiny snail parasite. It's not serious but not pleasant either. Check ahead of time and maybe bring along some cortisone cream just in case. Deeper waters are generally safer than shallow areas.

There's a current alert on the park page for swimmers itch at Todd (and Daisy Farm).
