Re: Wolf pups on Isle Royale
What wonderful news. I was waiting to hear if there would be any pups this year. This makes my day!

Re: An Isle Royale without wolves. Would u still visit?
I would continue to visit the park if wolves died out but it would be saddening. I have seen wolves 8 times on Isle Royale and each encounter, brief though many of them were, was a magical moment. Nature takes its course and all beings are mortal, but walking trails where woves have trod, hearing ...

Re: Greenstone/Minong Ridge Loop; Best direction of travel?
I would strongly recommend using the Voyageur as a resupply option. Everyone is different but why carry ten days food if you have a mail drop option? I have hiked the Minong in both directions and I would strongly recommend heading from McCargo Cove toward Washington Creek rather than reversing that ...

Any ideas on how you can reserve one of these cool new cabins?

Re: Wolves on IR
Jerry-I do remember meeting you on the Voyageur II. I hope you have found your way back out to the Island over the past year. I look forward to returning to the Island next Spring. Perhaps our paths will cross again but, if not, it was my pleasure to meet you.

Re: IR moose in National Parks Magazine
Carl is a very talented person. His two videos of Isle Royale set to music are quite inspirational and are available via iRNHA.

Ticks are only an issue for the moose as they are not interested in people.

Re: Solo Hiking
I also have met a number of women who were solo hiking on IR. The trails are very well marked and, with few exceptions, straight forward to follow. From a safety standpoint, the difficulties involved in getting to Isle Royale make the group of hikers who visit the park one that is very reasonable ...

Re: Wolves on IR
According to the Peterson's the three wolves that fell into the old mine pit near Todd Harbor probably were crossing over it when it was covered by snow and ice. Once they broke through the snow/ice cover they were unable to climb back out. In winter, with the sides of the pit covered in ice, it was ...

Re: Wolves on IR
Interesting-I do understand your point about the introduction of wolves or a female breeding wolf as a short term fix but there may be some value to the adaptive genes of the current wolf population that has been on the island for about ten generations or more. I was at an evening talk with the ...

Re: Barking Sounds at Moskey
My son saw a wolf along the shore at Moskey late in June. I also observed and listened to foxes barking in that same camp last month. Generally, wolves bark as part of alert behavior so my guess is you heard a fox but who knows.

Wolves on IR
I just completed my 28th trip to Isle Royale (my fourth this season) and I was struck by the absence of wolf sign. Across those four trips I saw barely any wolf scat and only a couple prints. The reduction of the wolf population to 9 animals leaves me feeling very concerned about their future on the ...

Re: Why do you go backpacking?
What a great question. I have backpacked in a variety of places but Isle Royale is the place I keep returning to. In September I will make my 24th trip to the Island, each of which has been a backpacking excursion. After my September trip I will have covered by foot over 1200 miles on the island. I ...

Re: Greenstone/Indian Portage June 22-26, 2011
Jerry-I believe I met you on the Voyageur II after you were picked up at Chippewah Harbor. If so, I really enjoyed our conversation en route to Grand Portage. I hope your long drive home went well. Your grit and determination, linked to your love of the island, really impressed me. Take care and I ...

Re: That 72-hour itch
I couldn't agree more. There is such a buildup to getting to Isle Royale. The travel arrangements that often are less than simple. Preparing your gear and food. The long ride up to wherever you are heading to catch a boat or the seaplane. And then you're there and the hard work of hiking or paddling ...
